SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Saint Paul Public Library is proud to announce the launch of a special edition library card celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Southeast Asian resettlement in Saint Paul. The card was designed by local artist Kao Lee Thao, whose artwork honors the vibrant Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian, and Vietnamese communities that have built new roots in Saint Paul.
The card’s design draws inspiration from traditional textiles, patterns, and landscapes woven together as a symbol of resilience, connection, and shared stories. Flowing water—from the Mekong to the Mississippi—represents survival, transformation, and the journeys that brought these communities to Minnesota. Through this artwork, the Library highlights the importance of representation, connection, and belonging for all community members.
“This special edition library card is more than a card; it’s a celebration of heritage, culture, and the stories that make our community stronger,” said Maureen Hartman, Director of Saint Paul Public Library. “We are honored to work with Kao Lee Thao to create a beautiful invitation to community members to visit our libraries and invite everyone in Saint Paul to celebrate alongside us.”
The Library is also using this card launch to highlight its upcoming 50th Anniversary storytelling event, which will take place on Saturday, December 13 from 2-4 p.m. at Sun Ray Library.
Availability
The special edition library card is available now at all Saint Paul Public Library locations. While supplies last, library visitors are encouraged to stop by and pick up a card to celebrate this milestone anniversary and engage with the Library’s resources.
About the Artist
Kao Lee Thao is a local Hmong American artist whose work blends traditional Southeast Asian motifs with contemporary expression. Her art seeks to uplift community voices, preserve cultural identity, and inspire connection across generations.
