Saint Paul Public Library Invites the Community to Regency-Era Ball Celebrating Jane Austen

The historic George Latimer Central Library will transform into a Regency-era ballroom for a free celebration of all things Jane Austen, a beloved author, and her 250th birthday.

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Saint Paul Public Library invites adults and teens to The Austen Ball on Wednesday, December 10, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at George Latimer Central Library, 90 West 4th Street. The free, Regency-era celebration is designed for Jane Austen aficionados—from those who have admired her work for ages and those who are just discovering her novels.

“Celebrating a love of Jane Austen is a wonderful way to bring people together,” said Allie Affinito, library manager at George Latimer Central Library. “Through stories, music, and dance, the Austen Ball embodies the library’s mission to create spaces where our community can connect, explore ideas, and enjoy literature in fun and meaningful ways.”

Ball guests are encouraged to dress in Regency-era attire—or simply come as they are—for an evening filled with live music, dancing, crafts, treats, and more. Attendees can create their own Regency-era title and name, decorate a fan, enjoy tea and light refreshments, enter a raffle for prizes, choose their “Darcy,” and take home a commemorative dance card.

The evening’s featured program includes instruction in traditional English Country Dance by George from Tapestry Folkdance, highlighting dance forms popular during the Regency era.

Jane Austen (1775-1817) is a beloved author of English literature best known for her sharp wit, keen social insight, and universally beloved portrayals of love and relationships. Her novels—Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, and others—are considered timeless for their explorations of class, character, and human connection. This year marks the 250th anniversary of Austen’s birth.
