Spring is here, and it's the perfect time to start planting! Did you know that Saint Paul Public Library (SPPL) offers free seeds to help you grow your own garden? Our three seed libraries—located at Riverview, Dayton’s Bluff, and Sun Ray Libraries—provide community members with the opportunity to cultivate fresh food, explore gardening, and contribute to a greener city. Each location operates a little differently, so here’s what you need to know before you visit.
Riverview Library: West Side Seed Library
The West Side Seed Library, a volunteer-run organization, is dedicated to fostering gardening knowledge, increasing access to locally grown food, and strengthening neighborhood connections.
How it works:
✔ Stop by Riverview Library during open hours to pick up seed packets for your garden.
✔ No formal check-out process—just take what you need and start planting!
✔ Questions? Contact the West Side Seed Library at westsideseedlibrary@gmail.com or find them on Facebook: West Side Seed Library.
Dayton’s Bluff Library: East Side Seed Library
A collaboration between SPPL, Metro State University Library and Learning Center, and Urban Roots, the East Side Seed Library follows a "Borrow, Grow, Share" model to encourage sustainable gardening practices.
How it works:
✔ Borrow – Take up to five seed packets and an information sheet. Check out at the desk.
✔ Grow – Plant at home and use gardening books from the library to guide you.
✔ Share – Harvest your produce, share with your community, and tell us about your gardening journey!

Sun Ray Library: Seed Library
The Sun Ray Library Seed Library is a seasonal program, running from April 1 through the summer.
How it works:
✔ Choose up to three seed packets to take home and keep.
✔ Let staff know what you're taking for our own record keeping—once you're ready, just pick, plant, and grow!
✔ Note: Sun Ray is not currently accepting seed donations.
No matter which seed library you visit, you’ll be taking a step toward sustainable living and connecting with the gardening community. Need more guidance? Check out SPPL’s collection of gardening books and resources to help your plants thrive.
