This spring, teens at Arlington Hills and Sun Ray libraries took center stage at two special events marking the end of their six-month Createch Artists in Residence program. Funded by the The Friends of Saint Paul Public Library who secured funding from the McNeely Foundation and the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, and in partnership with COMPAS Arts, the program gave teens the chance to collaborate with professional artists, build artistic skills, and strengthen community connections. Teens worked hands-on with artists, explored new mediums, and had the chance to showcase their work in public events that celebrated their creations and artistic growth.
At Arlington Hills Library, the after-hours event opened to warm weather, open doors, and the sounds of DJ Kool Akiem drifting down the sidewalk. Inside, the library had transformed into an art gallery featuring bold mixed-media work created with artist Katrina Knutson. The vibe was relaxed and joyful, with hands-on art activities, snacks, and a steady flow of family, friends, and community members celebrating teen creativity.

A week later at Sun Ray Library, teens who had worked with artist Victor Yepez showcased stunning mosaic pieces—some inspired by the northern lights. When the group wondered how to capture the glow of the aurora, one teen suggested using a light board—an idea that brought the final piece to life with radiant color.
Reflecting on the experience, Timothy, Sun Ray’s Teen Specialist, shared:
“I am so proud of [our teens]. I wasn’t expecting this experience to impact our relationships as much as it has. We all have deeper connections with each other because of the time we spent together creating these pieces.”

Both events were a celebration of the Createch community—where teens lead, explore, and grow through art, tech, and creativity in a space that’s all their own. Huge thanks to the artists, library staff, families, and most importantly, the teens, for making it all happen.
