Nicholson Commons - George Latimer Central Library
SPPL worked with MSR Design to engage community members to create a plan for service, space, and user experience improvements to Nicolson Commons. Through SPPL and MSR’s joint community engagement efforts, we have identified the following guiding principles:
- Welcoming: The Nicholson Commons will provide a welcoming, accessible, inspiring space for all, that invites curiosity and casual use within its historic formal backdrop.
- Empowering: Offerings and amenities will be obvious, user friendly, and encourage use to support you and your needs.
- Flexible: You can define your own experiences through a range of spaces that provide openness and privacy, activity and quiet, seating choices, and technology access. The Nicholson Commons will be comfortable for meeting and interacting with others and for being alone.
Thanks to The Friends of Saint Paul Public Library, the transformation of Nicholson Commons is funded annually by the Richard and Nancy Nicholson Endowment, an annual investment dedicated to the programs, materials, technology, and services offered in the space.
Coming soon to Nicholson: Study Rooms
Exciting changes are coming to Nicholson Commons: two new study rooms for public use will be ready by early 2025!
Construction Timeline
Construction will begin in mid-November 2024 and is expected to go through January 2025. During this time, we aim to minimize disruptions to your library experience, but here’s what to expect:
- You may hear some construction noise or notice traffic in the library. Earplugs will be available at the service desk for your comfort.
- A few shelves will be temporarily unavailable for browsing, but don’t worry—library staff are happy to pull materials for you!
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to improve your library.
What to Look Forward To
Once completed, the study rooms will be available to all on a first-come, first-served basis. These spaces are perfect for anyone needing quiet, privacy, or a distraction-free environment.
