Rondo Library Remodeling

The Rondo Library will be closed for renovations starting June 1.

The Rondo Library will undergo a $500,000 interior renovation beginning June 1, 2017. The library is planned to re-open in early fall, 2017.

Rondo is Saint Paul Public Library's busiest site with nearly 365,000 people visiting each year. The ten-year-old space is already showing signs of wear and tear due to this high traffic. Capital Improvement Bonds, issued in March, will fund the project.

Remodel Features

In January 2017, the Library solicited input from the community as to how to improve the space. Suggestions for improvements included:

  • A larger homework center
  • More quiet spaces
  • A dedicated teen space
  • A more open floorplan
  • More light
  • Easier navigation of books, magazines, music, DVDs, and other materials

We will strive to achieve these elements in the refresh to create a space that better serves the needs of patrons. Renderings of the new space will be published here as they are available.

Project Timeframe

The Rondo Library is busiest during the school year due to its extensive homework help services, so we have planned the project for the summer.

While the Rondo Library is closed, other library branches, including Hamline-Midway and Rice Street, will assume some of the Rondo Library's programming, and the Bookmobile will increase service in the Summit-University and Thomas-Dale neighborhoods. The library will also partner with community organizations to maintain some of its regular services within the area. Details regarding programs and services will be published here as they become available.

Construction Firm

A construction firm has not yet been chose for the project. Interested parties may attend a  CERT Certification Workshop on April 26 at 1:30 p.m. at the Rondo Library, to learn how to bid on this and other City of Saint Paul projects.
