Eleanor Rudin named Library Volunteer of the Year

Date: Jun 15th, 2016

SAINT PAUL, MN - Eleanor Rudin was named Saint Paul Public Library Volunteer of the Year at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Event on May 19, 2016 at the historic Landmark Center in downtown Saint Paul.

Eleanor recently retired from 3M where she was a Lab Technician for 33 years. She's been using her retirement as an opportunity to challenge herself and provide service to her community. Eleanor is in her third year with the Reading Together program where she meets once a week with a fourth grader for reading and literacy activities. She also volunteers twice a week at the Rondo Homework Center. This school year alone, she has volunteered over 160 hours, working with over 85 different students ages 5 - 75 during over 150 individual tutor sessions, some days working with 5 or 6 different people during a single shift.

"Eleanor has been one of the most devoted, patient, and thoughtful volunteers I've known in my years working for the library. She's also one of the most good-humored and humble people I know," said Eric Whalen, Library Associate and Homework Center Coordinator at Rondo Library. "We've really asked a lot of her and depended on her to fulfill many roles. I have multiple students that request to work specifically with Eleanor whenever she is here. I've witnessed her endless patience and consideration that she puts into each tutoring session, whether it's math, science, social studies, or English, and she's always ready and willing to dive into something new or unknown with any age group. She has a resilient attitude that youth and adults need to see in order to believe that they too can learn new things and be successful in the academic world."

Sun Ray Nature-Smart Library Wins Community Action Award
Collaboration transforms a library into a community hub for nature and recreation

Saint Paul, Minn. - The City of Saint Paul's Sun Ray Library, the Children & Nature Network and their partners were selected as a winner for the Sun Ray Nature-Smart Library project at the Environmental Initiative Awards on Thursday, May 26. This program, hosted by the nonprofit Environmental Initiative, annually honors projects that have achieved extraordinary outcomes by harnessing the power of partnership.

The newly renovated Sun Ray Library in Saint Paul is quickly becoming a national model of success in environmental literacy and engagement. The library transformed both its physical environment and programming to serve as a place for families and children to gather, learn, explore, and engage with nature.

"We're used to thinking of reading and learning as something we do inside," said Rebecca Ryan, library manager. "Our natural library is connecting young people and families to the outdoors in a really unique way by pairing the imagination of reading with exploration in nature." The library boasts robust youth and family programming, youth leadership training programs, and collaborative urban greening projects - including a thriving pollinator garden.

"Collaboration isn't always easy. This project is a wonderful example of what can be accomplished for our environment, for our youth, and for Minnesota families when we choose to work together," says Environmental Initiative's Executive Director, Mike Harley.

World of Tomorrow

World of Tomorrow

Summary

Exerpted from Noel Murray's review for the AV Club:

"Throughout this year's Sundance Film Festival, whenever I'd run into my fellow critics, we'd go through the usual ritual exchange of, "What have you liked so far?" Passing movie titles back and forth, more often than I could count, the conversation would end with one or both of us saying, "Of course, the best thing I've seen is that Don Hertzfeldt cartoon, World Of Tomorrow. I don't expect anything to top it."

Can an animated short be the best film at a festival? Or the best of the year? Because although World Of Tomorrow is only 15 minutes long, it's as funny, imaginative, and heartbreaking as anything released so far in 2015, and I wouldn't be surprised if I could make that same claim on December 31. At Sundance, where I had a link to an online screener, I watched World Of Tomorrow nearly every night before I went to sleep, as a pre-bedtime devotional."

World of Tomorrow is available BluRay only. It was nomintated for the Best Animated Short Oscar.

A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota

Summary

Sixteen of Minnesota's best writers provide a range of perspectives on what it is like to live as a person of color in one of the whitest states in the nation. They give readers a splendid gift: the gift of touching another human beings inner reality, behind masks and veils and politeness. They bring us generously into experiences that we must understand if we are to come together in real relationships. Minnesota communities struggle with some of the nations worst racial disparities. As its authors confront and consider the realities that lie beneath the numbers, this book provides an important tool to those who want to be part of closing those gaps.
