Saint Paul Public Library is hosting several Urban Homesteading programs in neighborhood libraries around the city in February, March, and April. These free events encourage people to explore ways they can participate in growing, gathering, and preparing food in an urban setting. No registration is necessary.
Maple Sugaring on Tuesday, February 7 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Rondo Library, 461 N Dale St, St. Paul, 651-266-7400
Basic techniques and practical tips on how to tap your own back yard maple trees to make affordable pure maple syrup. This hands-on workshop will include a brief history, equipment, tree identification, tapping, collection and finishing your syrup. For aspiring/novice/hobbyist sugar makers. Presented by Chris Ransom
West Side Seed Library Annual Opening, February 11 from 1-3 p.m. at Riverview Library, 1 E George St, St Paul, 651-292-6626
Kickoff celebration of the 2017 growing season with the opening of the seed library, activities for the kids, and mini workshops on starting seeds indoors, winter sowing and growing your own sprouts. Presented by Growing West Side.
Composting and Vermiculture, February 18 from 1-2 p.m. at Rice Street Library, 1011 Rice St, St. Paul, 651-558-2223
Learn how to compost your kitchen and yard waste in your own back yard, to improve your garden soil, save you money, and decrease landfill waste. Learn how to choose and prepare a site and structure, how to feed and maintain the compost pile, and what to do with the compost once it is ready. Presented by Master Gardener, Frank Dolejsi
